The Paiste Philosophy is to continually create new sound with cymbals, gongs, and bronze percussion instruments according to the creative needs of drummers and percussionists. The foundation of this search for musical sound is the successful combination of the musician’s creative imagination of musicians and the inventive spirit of the musical instrument maker. The spark that continually invigorates this search is music itself, in all its beauty, complexity, and seemingly never-ending capacity for new ways of expression. The relationship between Paiste as sound makers, and drummers and percussionists as musicians, is the very intimate manifestation of this deep principle. This is Paiste’s true purpose.
I spoke to Paiste Americas’ Artist Relations department multiple times over the years and gave them my ideas and concepts to create heavier weighted Hi-Hats and Rides cymbals and bring back the cool original smaller 2002 Black Label cymbal logo.
The idea was to create and have Paiste manufacture heavier cymbals very similar yet acoustically more refined to Zildjian’s Z Customs very heavy and beautifully polished cymbals that I used to enjoy playing. Paiste didn’t have anything remotely like that at the time of my requests in regards to a heavy and a highly polished cymbal line up.
My personal favorite and the very popular 2002 Cymbal line has been around since the late 1970s and has been used by some of the best and most famous rock drummers of all time. But in the 1980s, Paiste changed the 2002 Cymbal line logo to a much larger red rounded square shaped logo and it has not changed since. I feel the large red colored 2002 logo is totally outdated and completely detracts from the natural beauty of the cymbals. After ten long years an updated version of the older logo was finally brought to market in 2016 with Paiste’s new 2002 Black ‘Big Beat’ cymbals family. Thanks Paiste, but I still would like to see the original classic 2002 cymbals with smaller classier black silkscreened logos or even better yet, I would prefer to see them engraved instead as they originally were.
